So, our trip to Georgia to visit Ella was a sad one. We didn't really expect it to be that great, but we were reminded of just how sick she is and how little she cares for anyone but herself at this point. Even admitting that she misses us, home, the dog, her toys.... anything, is too much vulnerability for her. It's very strange and indescribably sad for two parents and a sister that would give their lives to have her healthy.
After a few days, it was clear that our presence was not really affecting anyone in a positive way, so we decided to head home.
In the process, we decided to make sure that we stopped along the way to build up some positive memories and help in the recovery from a pretty painful trip. It worked. :)
We thought of Ella often (it seemed every few minutes, which is nothing new), but we also managed to laugh a little, forget for a while, and just enjoy being together. It ended up being the smartest thing we did the entire trip.
